From a pile of papers to an argument

A literature review is not a summary of what you read. It is an argument about the state of a field that ends in a gap your work will address. The most common failure is a review that catalogues sources one after another and never builds toward anything — examiners call it descriptive, reviewers call it unfocused, and both mean the same thing.

Consultation helps at three points. Scoping: what the review is for, how wide the net should be, and which databases and search terms will find the literature that matters. Organisation: how to structure the material — thematically, chronologically, by method, by position — so that the structure itself does argumentative work. Synthesis: how to move from what each source says to what the field collectively shows, and to the specific, defensible gap that follows.

You read, you judge, you write. Your specialist reviews the scoping decisions, the structure and the drafts, and tells you where the argument is not yet landing.

Scope and search strategy agreed before the reading begins
Structure chosen to carry the argument, not just organise sources
Critical synthesis reviewed for where it becomes descriptive
Gap statement tested against the literature it claims to follow from
Who it’s for

PhD candidates writing a literature review chapter, researchers preparing a standalone narrative or scoping review, and authors whose introduction has to make the case for the study.

What we deliver

Everything included, end to end

Scoping memo

Purpose, breadth, inclusion boundaries and a search approach for the review, agreed in writing.

Source organisation framework

A structure for the material — thematic, methodological or otherwise — with the reasoning for why it suits your argument.

Annotated draft review

Your draft returned with margin notes on where synthesis becomes summary, where claims outrun the sources, and where the gap is not yet established.

Gap and contribution statement review

The paragraph that justifies your study, tested for whether the literature actually supports it.

How it works

A clear, transparent process

STEP 01
Scoping call

What the review is for, how it will be assessed, and how far the field extends.

STEP 02
Search and structure

Search approach and organising framework reviewed before drafting begins.

STEP 03
Draft review

One or more rounds of annotated feedback on your drafts as the argument develops.

STEP 04
Final read

A read of the completed review for coherence, coverage and whether the gap follows.

The pre-submission peer review caught issues two reviewers would have flagged. We were accepted on the first round with only minor revisions.

Is this the same as a systematic review?

No. A systematic review follows a registered protocol with defined search, screening and synthesis methods, and is itself a research output. A literature review — narrative, scoping or critical — is more flexible and is usually in service of a thesis or a study. If you need the former, see our systematic review consultation.

Will you find the sources for me?

We advise on where and how to search, and will point out obvious omissions in what you have found. The reading and the judgement about what each source contributes are yours — that judgement is the substance of the review.

How many sources should a literature review have?

There is no number. A doctoral chapter in a mature field may need to engage with a great many; a focused introduction needs the ones that establish the gap. Coverage is judged by whether anything important is missing, not by a count.

Can you help with a review that has already been criticised as descriptive?

Yes — that is one of the most common reasons people come to us. The fix is usually structural rather than a rewrite: reorganising the material so the sections argue rather than list.
